Changing up your skincare routine

Surely changing up your skin care routine should be as easy as buying a new brand of cleanser, toner and moisturiser. Hoping that these fancy new products will dramatically transform our skin overnight and we will wake up with younger healthy and glowing skin, right? Unfortunately not. Changing your 3-step routine can cause sudden break outs and cause your skin to become the opposite of what your ultimately looking for. In order to effectively switch products your skin will need time to acclimatise by introducing one product at a time and slowly introduce it to your (already on point) skincare routine more frequently (say twice a week) before using it everyday.

Some products I have recently been introduced to, after a long time trying to perfect that natural glow, are Kiehl’s facial oils. Yes, I’m just as surprised as you! They have a misconception that using oil on your face will cause breakouts. Wrong. Also if you already have oily skin that you should totally avoid oily products. Wrong. Sometimes we can choose products like harsh cleansers and exfoliates that can actually strip all the natural oils from your face and your skin will over compensate and produce more oil (not what your after) that can cause clogged pores. Oils are fantastic for hydrating and restoring the skin as they contain vitamins, amino acids and anti-oxidants that actually help soothe inflamed or irritated skin while helping reduce skin blotchiness for a more even and brighter look.

Khiel’s have two great oil products for both day and night use. The Daily Reviving Concentrate Oil is light weight facial oil that keeps skin looking radiant all day. Apply it first thing in the morning. At night, something I have become somewhat addicted to is the Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which contains pure essential oils and distilled botanicals to visibly restore the appearance of your skin by morning. Not only does it make your skin immediately feel smoother, the lavender and evening primrose smell definitely gets you into that relaxed ‘lets get to bed’ state. Using oils is also great because all you need is a few drops, as a little goes a long way.

Remember your normal 3-step skin care regime isn’t set for all year round. Like the seasons and your wardrobe you should rotate your products in accordance. Currently being in summer your complexion can tend to be oilier (not to say you can’t have some essential oils within your routine) and in the winter months much drier so in particular your moisturiser you use in the summer just won’t cut it in winter.

Some tips to changing up your skin routine as we head towards the cooler months is to start hydrating your skin. Change to a heavier moisturiser. When the weather warms up again you can introduce a more light weight formula, like oils. Also using exfoliates during the summer months as you want to make sure that you remove that unwanted build up of sweat and oils that create clogged pores.

Just remember when changing products:
– Go slow, introduce one product at a time
– Try the new product a couple of times a week before using it full time
– Know your skin type, test patch the formula to avoid any reactions
– Lightweight products for summer, heavier for winter
